Easy Mapping and Spraying: Stand Out From the Competition

Kyle White, a forestry consultant in land management at Acacia Forest Products, has been an AgTerra customer using SprayLogger and MapItFast for the past two years.  His company does weed control spraying for large landowners in Satsuma, Alabama.

One particular weed in this area is an invasive species called Cogon Grass.  It is a thick, aggressive grass that spreads rapidly in the pine plantations of Alabama.  According to he US Department of Agriculture, Cogon Grass is on the Federal list of noxious weeds and is designated as the world’s seventh worst weed.  It can destroy wildlife habitat and be damaging to the forest, pastures, and desirable vegetation.

Kyle said using MapItFast and SprayLogger makes paperwork a breeze and takes any guess work out of chemical application.  His customers are really happy with his services.

“The automated reports and maps are appealing to clients and have helped me land a couple of new contracts this year,” he said.  “This sets me apart from my competition.”

Kyle emphasized that the software is easy to use for all levels.  He has people of different ages and technology skill levels on his crew and all of them were able to learn it quickly.

He also really appreciates the level of customer service he receives from AgTerra.

Kyle explains, “if I have a problem, the customer service is second to none.  I have enjoyed working with AgTerra and look forward to growing my business with theirs.”

City of Casper:

Pen and Paper Free for Seven Months (and Counting)

 Casper

Before April of this year, Jim Gerhart and his weed and pest department at the City of Casper, Wyoming, were using paper forms to track their spray applications. “We were looking for a solution that would ease the amount of paperwork that the spray crews had to fill out and the end of the day,” he recalls.
The initial system setup and testing required Gerhart to work closely with our SprayLogger experts to make sure his equipment was ready for the season. “AgTerra has been great in terms of customer support and handling questions through phone or email,” he said.
Utilizing both SprayLogger E3 and SprayLogger Backpack units, Gerhart was able to improve efficiency and accuracy of spray jobs completed across the city in the 2017 spray season. In the peak of the spray season, Gerhart had five applicators using the SprayLogger system. He also shared a SprayLogger unit with an employee in the city’s athletic department for spray applications on the athletic fields. “It was a little bit of a learning curve for him to get used to the equipment,” said Gerhart, “but he caught on quick.”
2017 Field of Dreams spray job completed by the City of Casper’s athletic department.
The ability to report and export spray data made the system a valuable tool for sharing spray job information across departments. Not only was Gerhart able to replace pen and paper for spray job reports; the data he collected could also be exported to shapefile format for use in the city’s GIS system.
Looking to the future, Gerhart feels that the MapItFast and SprayLogger products would be beneficial in other departments, including the golf course, cemetery, wastewater and Casper Public Utilities divisions. “If budgets improve,” he says, “I would like to expand our system to allow automatic boom selection by adding more ports to our control boxes. I would also like to outfit more sprayers with the product.”

City of Sheridan Effectively Targets Mosquitoes
with MapItFast and SprayLogger
E3
In the spring of 2016, Chad Franklin with the City of Sheridan’s recreation department contacted AgTerra to see how their products could help him better manage the city’s mosquito program. After a tour of AgTerra’s facility and a demonstration of their products, Franklin made the decision to purchase an AgTerra SprayLogger and MapItFast system with the intent of mapping and reporting from his mosquito fogger truck.  But, the results have exceeded expectations.
“When I first came across the SprayLogger and MapItFast products from AgTerra, I knew that I had found what I was looking for to accurately and effectively track and record the information I needed.” – Chad Franklin

SprayLogger Update:
Multi-Flow Now Available on E3 Units
search

The initial release of the SprayLogger E3 boasted the unit’s ability to read multiple booms simultaneously.  Now, AgTerra has taken the E3 one step further by enabling the unit to read, record and map up to three flow sensors simultaneously!

Applicators using dedicated chemical tanks or those with carrier streams that require individual recording from each tank will benefit greatly from this new feature. Additionally, the update will make it easier than ever to track spray on vehicles that do both nozzle and hose reel spraying.  A large flow sensor can be used to record the nozzle spray while the small flow sensor records hose reel work.  The E3 can now track both at the same time – no re-calibration needed!
For more information on how to set up your multi-port SprayLogger E3 unit with the new settings or upgrade your single port box, call AgTerra today at (307) 673-1050 or email us at solutions@agterra.com.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors Safely with MapItFast
By Jason Hodges
Enjoy
Every 4th of July weekend, my family and I take the opportunity to explore the backyard that is our great country. This annual adventure has been even more exciting the last several years as we moved from our lifelong home in Florida to the great state of Wyoming.
The Big Horn Mountains, located just outside of Sheridan, are home to some of the most beautiful landscapes Wyoming has to offer. My family has made it a goal to explore every inch of them. Because the area is still somewhat new to us, it’s important that we’re prepared with the tools and know-how to handle unfamiliar terrain.
While it’s easy to remember hiking shoes, sunscreen and water, a map is sometimes overlooked. Sure, I could throw a paper map in the glove box, but who really wants to unfold that on the trail? When it comes to unexplored territory, I want to know that my family members can have adventures and always find their way back.
With my wife and kids equipped with MapItFast, the days of reading a paper map are behind us. Read More Here

AgTerra answers commonly-asked questions about MapItFast

asked

When too much data has been added to a single MapItFast project, users may notice that it is slow to load on the website and on devices. In this section, AgTerra provides some tips and tricks for managing your data.
How do I fix and avoid slow loading projects in MapItFast?
With the busy summer season upon us, AgTerra often gets phone calls from customers who are experiencing slow load times on their projects. In some instances, the load time is so long that the project has become nearly unmanageable to work with. So what is the cause of this problem and how can it be avoided? The answer is simple: project management.
Today’s mobile devices are extremely powerful and capable of many things, however they still have their limits for processing data. If you start a MapItFast project and try to use the same one all season, there’s a good chance that project will eventually get too large and you’ll notice slower load times.  As days, weeks, and months of information accumulate, the file size gets larger and the project slower.
If not managed properly, having too many map objects, Strider forms and photos on a project can and will tax the speed and memory of your device. Photos in particular can dramatically increase the size of a project. It is a good practice to take a few great photos of what is needed rather than taking many unnecessary ones that will ultimately affect the functionality of the project.
Luckily, AgTerra makes it easy to split up your data and organize it appropriately. With our advanced search and select tools, copying or moving items over to their own projects is simple and effective. And with our multi-tiered folder nesting, it’s easy to organize your projects for quick access. By utilizing these tools, you can ensure that your project sizes stay fast and manageable while giving you access to all of the information you collected.
For more information on how to edit, copy and move objects between projects you can watch a video here.

MapItFast Feature Update:
Mass Import Icons
icons

How do I mass import icons into MapItFast?
Since the introduction of custom icons in MapItFast, the feature has been popular with customers for use in data dictionaries and map customization. But did you know that you can now mass import your icons using a ZIP file? This new feature allows users to import groups of icons into MapItFast quickly and efficiently. Below is a link to a training video that shows just how simple the process is.

Collecting data with MapItFast is easy, but sometimes that data needs to be modified. What if a user adds several polygons to the wrong project?
What if you import a file from Google Earth and want to change the icon or color of certain objects? The latest set of desktop tools for MapItFast were designed for scenarios just like these, and more.
The search and select tools on the MapItFast website interface allow users to sort and select objects by keyword, date range, or by drawing around them with the box select tool or lasso tool.
Once objects are selected, MapItFast will count the number of points, total polygon area, and total line distance, all of which is displayed in a convenient pop-up window. The selected objects can be edited, renamed, moved to different projects, copied to a project or layerset, or associated with a single Strider form.
With MapItFast’s search and select tools you can combine data from smaller projects into a larger one, or create new smaller projects for convenient use in the field.

Active Map Triggers:

See job status updates instantly!
When it comes to completing jobs in the field, time is everything. If a crew visits a site only to find that it was treated earlier by a different crew, that’s time lost. This problem can be avoided with the use of Active Map Triggers.
Here’s an example…
Site inspectors travel to points colored red on a MapItFast project. After they perform the necessary inspections, they select “Complete” in a Strider form. The red icon automatically changes to yellow on the map.
Now, both the job supervisor and other field inspectors know what sites have been completed and what remains simply by glancing at their mobile devices or desktop application.

We at AgTerra are constantly impressed by the way customers use our products to help solve problems. This newsletter highlights the use of MapItFast to effectively monitor and control mountain pine beetle in the Black Hills of Wyoming. The green trees prove it!  We’ll also get you up to speed on some of the latest and greatest product news.
Pine Beetle Response in the Black Hills of Wyoming

E3

The success story coming out of the Black Hills of Wyoming regarding pine beetle control is nothing short of amazing. Using AgTerra’s MapItFast and Strider forms, contractors have mapped, recorded and removed thousands of infested trees. As a result of their efforts, it is becoming harder and harder to find beetle infested trees in a now-healthier forest.  MapItFast continues to play an integral part in this ongoing project because contractors are able to conduct mapping activities on low cost devices with very little training or down time.  All data is automatically synced to a centralized database so that project coordinators can better manage contracting activities, data analysis and project progress.

AgTerra introduced its latest product, SnapMapper, less than a year ago and the product has already gained popularity for mapping and recording equipment operations.  Used in combination with MapItFast, SnapMapper automatically creates map points and lines whenever a component on a piece of equipment is used.

SnapMapper is easy to install and will begin mapping whenever a button, switch, or lever is activated. This feature allows the user to focus on the job at hand rather than a mobile device. The examples below are just some of the ways customers are using SnapMapper:
  • Right-of-way mowing and brush cutting operations
  • Agriculture harvest operations
  • Salt spread and snow removal
  • Prairie dog and gopher bait applications
  • Seed spread on reclamation projects

Lookup Tables Help You Populate and Speed Up Forms
sd

Filling out forms in the field can be painful and time consuming, especially if you have repetitive data or you don’t have all of the required information on hand. Why not take advantage of the lookup function in Strider forms and reports?
The lookup function allows users to narrow down selections and auto-populate multiple data fields based upon a single field entry or selection. Lookup tables are easy to use. The user simply types or select from a list and any related data fields are automatically filled out.  For example, if a user selects the name of a chemical in a dropdown list, the EPA number, active ingredient, application amount, and other information related to that chemical will automatically fill
in the next section of the form. Forms are filled faster because there’s no need to remember or retype entries.
You can find more information on the lookup tool in the Strider Forms and Reports help guide at help.agterra.com.
Form Triggers Create Story Maps in Real-time
triggers

Maps help us visualize data and tell stories about that data in an instant.  When you look at a blue and red map of the United States, you immediately know which states voted Democrat and which voted Republican. Did you know you can build the same kind of map with MapItFast and have the colors of your point, line or polygon objects change according to an answer in a Strider form?

With the active map trigger function, MapItFast enables users to set unique icons and colors for map objects based upon a changing value in an attached form.  For instance, a point marking a work order location could be automatically changed from red to green as a technician completes the work order and updates a Strider form. This icon change will allow crew supervisors to  view and monitor work order status on the MapItFast web console or mobile device in real time.
